The Story behind Dr Sunshine
Dr Sunshine was born not out of a business idea - but out of a moment of quiet empathy in a hospital corridor.
Years ago, Yasmine, now the Managing Director of Dr Sunshine, was a young patient admitted for a medical procedure that required several days of hospitalisation. Though the stay was difficult, she was fortunate to be surrounded by family and friends who brought her books, games, and small comforts to help pass the time.
Confined to bed for most of her stay, Yasmine was only able to walk on the eve of her discharge. That day, encouraged to take a short walk down the hospital corridor, she passed a young boy sitting quietly by himself - no visitors, no toys, nothing to distract him from the unfamiliar surroundings. His name was Gianni, and his sadness was visible.
Yasmine returned to her room, gathered a few of the items her loved ones had brought her, and gave them to Gianni. What happened next stuck with her forever: his face lit up. In that small gesture - a shared moment of kindness - a lifelong friendship began.
But that moment also planted a seed.
She remembers thinking: “How is it that something so small could mean so much? Why doesn’t something like this already exist for kids like Gianni - to help them feel less alone, less scared and more like children again?”
Years passed, but that idea never faded. It came back each time she visited someone in hospital - especially when she saw children in beds with nothing but time and silence. And when the opportunity came through the Junior Achievement program to turn a heartfelt idea into something real, Dr Sunshine was born.
What does Dr Sunshine Stand For
Dr Sunshine Comfort Kits are lovingly curated with one goal: to bring Comfort, Hope, and Warmth to children during their hospital stay. Each box is filled with thoughtfully chosen items - a soft blanket, creative supplies, a playful game, and even an original Dr Sunshine storybook - designed to brighten the day of a young patient who needs a lift.
Yasmine says:
“I want each child who opens a Dr Sunshine Kit to feel remembered, loved, and strong - and to look forward to a future where they can one day do the same for someone else.”
The dream?
That Dr Sunshine becomes a name synonymous with care - something you think of when you visit a child in hospital or when you want to help a young patient feel less alone. A small gesture that makes a big difference.
